About the Discount Calculator
"30% off $199.99" sounds great until you try to compute it at the register. This calculator gives you the final sale price and your exact savings in one glance. It also supports stacked discounts — like an extra 10% off at checkout — which stores apply one after the other, not added together.
How to calculate a discount by hand
Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the savings; subtract that from the original price. Faster: multiply the price by (1 − discount%). For 25% off $80: 80 × 0.75 = $60.
Watch out for stacked discounts: 20% off plus another 25% off is not 45% off — it is 0.8 × 0.75 = 0.6, i.e. 40% off. The calculator handles this correctly so you can check whether that "extra savings" deal is actually as big as it looks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the final price after a discount?
Multiply the original price by (1 minus the discount percentage as a decimal). For 30% off, multiply by 0.70. A $199.99 item at 30% off costs $139.99 and you save $60.
How do double discounts work?
The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the two percentages are multiplied, not added. 20% off plus 25% off equals 40% off overall (0.8 × 0.75 = 0.6), not 45%.
How do I calculate the discount percentage from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. An $80 item sold at $60 is 25% off.
Does the calculator include sales tax?
No — it shows pre-tax figures so you can judge the discount itself. Tax applies to the final price in most US states (on the discounted amount, not the original).
