About the Tip Calculator

Working out a tip at the table is exactly the kind of mental math that goes wrong when you are hungry. Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage (one-tap presets included) and how many people are splitting — the calculator instantly shows the tip, the grand total, and what each person owes.

How much should you tip?

Customs vary by country, but the common US guide for table service is 15–20%, with 18% as a solid default; 10% signals dissatisfaction, and 25%+ marks exceptional service. In many other countries a 10% service charge is already on the bill or tipping is simply not expected — worth checking before you travel.

Tip before or after tax?

Purists tip on the pre-tax subtotal; in practice most people simply use the bill total since the difference is small. Our calculator applies the percentage to the bill amount you enter, so you can choose either figure.

Frequently asked questions

How is the tip calculated?

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. For an $84.50 bill at 18%, the tip is $15.21. The total is then divided by the number of people to get each person’s share.

How much should I tip in the United States?

For restaurant table service, 15–20% is standard and 18% is a common default. Bartenders typically get $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. For takeout, a small tip or none is generally acceptable.

How do we split the bill fairly?

Splitting the total evenly is simplest for similar orders. For very different orders, ask each person for their own items plus their share of shared dishes, tax and tip.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette guides say tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically correct, but many people tip on the final total. The difference on a typical bill is only a few cents to a dollar.
